Jaro Karppinen, MD, is a specialist and Professor of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Oulu (currently emeritus). He has been working as Director of Rehabilitation services in Wellbeing Services County of South Karelia since 2020. Prof. Karppinen has been an investigator in many clinical studies related to low back pain and sciatica. His has a wide research spectrum including for example environmental, metabolic and genetic risk factors of musculoskeletal disorders. His current research interests focus on artificial intelligence-based analytics of lumbar magnetic resonance imaging, population-level rehabilitation interventions and on biopsychosocial care pathways in primary healthcare among patients with musculoskeletal disorders. He has published over 320 peer-reviewed scientific publications in international journals with H-index (scopus.com) of 67. He is a member of the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine since 2012.
